Between 2014 and 2015, while improving and testing our wine with friends and acquaintances, we sometimes had to transport the wine in a somewhat “illegal” way. During one of the trips, we named ourselves “outlaws”. Grounded in a certain collective imagination and in characters that sometimes appear on the news, there emerged the designation that we have attributed to our wine. We developed a story around three characters, which are the basis of the brand’s conceptual framework and graphic line – “Manuel Sarro’s sons”.
Manel Sarro had three children, each from a different woman, who all described his personality as unpredictable, selfish, and domineering. He would meet his end on one fateful Saturday night. In a cloud of inebriation, he was stabbed three times and left to bleed in a ditch by the highway like a stray dog. The sun had already risen high that Sunday morning when the town found out what happened and, in an uproar, went to tell his eldest son, BRANCO.
BRANCO, a heavy-set man of few words, just like his father. He was generally easy-going, but his eyes burned in anger while receiving the dreadful news. Irreverent and somewhat introverted, few friends knew him well. However, he had an unshakeable sense of justice, was often seen protecting the weak, and possessed a deep love for nature. Secretly, he fostered a burning desire for his English teacher. He had a photo of her, which he kept under the drawer of his bedside table. This passion would bloom into a luscious smile of pleasure across his face and helped balance the irresponsible sweetness through which he viewed life.
BRANCO had a half-sister, ROSE, who lived on the other side of town, but they met very rarely. Sometimes, he spotted her from a distance while playing with the other boys in the park of the village. BRANCO already witnessed much of the temperament that he so often saw in his father. She was domineering and insolent with a sharp tongue. She sucked on candies and gave an evil eye to all the men who passed. BRANCO was worried because she already seemed destined to change her life course .
Concerning Manel Sarro’s third son, no one knows his name nor is certain of what he’s really made of. He was the result of an incestuous love affair with his Aunt Marina in view of the Douro river during a hot summer’s day in August. Someone saidthat they saw the bastard with his mother at St. Bento station.
Concerning Manel Sarro’s sons, there is much more to be told. We will save the inspiration for other vintages.
We have 5 ha of vineyards, divided into five plots with different ages. Three plots are composed of traditional, hundred year-old vineyards, with mixed indigenous grape varieties. Two plots were modernized ten years ago.
The vineyards are located in the Demarcated Douro Region (Douro River Valley) in the Baixo Corgo sub-region at Santa Marta de Penaguião.
We apply methods of Sustainable Viticulture, which ensures our practices are environmentally-friendly.

FORA DA LEI (The Outlaw) brand was born in 2015.
We have been selling our grapes for decades. In 2013, we decided to start producing our own wine.
Since then, we have been improving the profile of the wine.
The people who work with us are our greatest asset. We like people, and that’s the simple reason why we invest in them.
We like to celebrate life and wine surrounded by friends.

The “ZineFestPt” proposes a series of activities that aim to reveal the zine´s universe to everyone; micro-publishing, self-publishing, independent and
alternative culture associated with books and especially the fanzines!
We want to give an idea of the contemporary art scene in this area, with an exhibition of zines, shopping stalls/trading and sales and opening doors to
experimentation in creative activities “do it yourself” (DIY), from simple folding to creating a handbook and also exploring various printing techniques.
Fora da Lei Wines were present.
